Sierra Club is the nation’s oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization, with millions of members and supporters nationwide. Sierra Club has long been a leading voice for clean transportation. Using the traditional tools of advocacy—organizing, lobbying, litigation, and public outreach—Sierra Club has fought to strengthen tailpipe emissions standards, improve vehicle efficiency, and to secure much-needed support for critical infrastructure—most recently through work on the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Sierra Club has deep expertise in vehicle charging policies and programs. Sierra Club regularly issues the AchiEVe Toolkit, a set of model policies heavily focused on infrastructure issues, and was an early developer of publicly available resources to support smart use of the VW “diesel-gate” settlement funds.

For nearly a decade, Sierra Club has led efforts to shape utility regulatory policy and to develop equitable and forward-looking utility charging programs. Sierra Club is a founding member of the Transportation Electrification Accord (a set of guiding principles with more than 120 signatories) and has been active in nearly every major EV-related utility proceeding across the country to date. Our attorneys and policy advocates meet with decision makers and key stakeholders, work to shape new utility EV policies, and litigate complex proceedings before state utility commissions. Our advocacy has helped secure more than $3B in funding for EV charging investments, much of which is dedicated to improving access to clean transportation options and reducing harmful emissions in overburdened communities.
